Walla Walla Gears Up for an Exciting Soccer Season
As the summer days begin to shorten, excitement is in the air in Walla Walla Valley, and it’s all thanks to the high school soccer teams that are ready to kick off another thrilling season. Four varsity teams are sharpening their cleats and preparing for the first matches, promising fun and competitive action for everyone in the community.
Walla Walla High School Set to Shine
First up, Walla Walla High School, affectionately known as Wa-Hi, is poised to make a big splash this year. Their season starts off with a string of several matches before diving into the much-anticipated Mid-Columbia Conference (MCC) campaign. Wa-Hi fans can mark their calendars for September 9 when the Blue Devils host their first MCC showdown against Chiawana at 6 p.m. It’s the event fans have been waiting for!
In keeping with the exciting changes this season, Wa-Hi will now play all varsity matches at the newly renovated Blue Devil Stadium, a project made possible by a bond levy approved back in February 2024. To celebrate this transformation, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on September 3 at 10 a.m., offering a sneak peek into the fresh improvements. The first varsity match at the new stadium is scheduled for September 6, where the Blue Devils will face a Lake City team from Coeur d’Alene at 6 p.m.
In addition to the thrilling matches, the festivities will include performances from the Wa-Hi Chamber Singers who will sing the national anthem, and a special halftime commemorative photo featuring past alumni. So bring your families and friends to soak up the amazing community spirit!
Blue Devils head coach Dana Evans, who was named the 2024 MCC Coach of the Year, is leading a talented group this year. With four returning all-conference selections: Bridget Boyd, Jenna Abbey, Korinne Hayes, and Anneliese Triebwasser, expectations are high. Last season, the Blue Devils achieved a commendable record with 10 wins, although they narrowly missed qualifying for state after two intense postseason matches.
College Place Hawks Ready for Action
Not too far behind, the College Place High School Hawks are set to soar into their season with their opening match in Cashmere on Saturday at 6 p.m. Coach Russ Carder has a positive outlook on the season, especially with key players like Audrey Schild, Brackyn Ricks, and Alison Villa ready to make their mark. Gracelynn Tonn is also back on field, recovering strong and eager to contribute. Having made the playoffs for the first time in a decade last year, the Hawks are eager to keep that momentum going this season.
Walla Walla Valley Academy Knights and Prescott Tigers
The Walla Walla Valley Academy Knights are gearing up to kick off their WIAA Class 1B District 5 East Cascades League season on September 9 in Spangle, looking to start strong and build on their past experiences. Meanwhile, the Prescott Tigers will be hosting their own season opener on September 16 against WWVA as part of an East Cascades League (ECL) match starting at 4 p.m. Coach Mark Grimm is excited to lead his team, featuring six returning regulars, including All-ECL midfielder Eduardo Valdovinos. It’s a fresh chapter for Prescott, as some players from last season have opted out, resulting in changes to their roster.
Community Spirit Remains Strong
Overall, all teams have their sights set on competitive seasons, focusing on both development and community spirit. As the games take off, fans and families are encouraged to come together and support their teams. With thrilling matches ahead, Walla Walla Valley is sure to witness plenty of goals, cheers, and memorable moments this soccer season!
