Central Florida High School Football Teams Shine in Thrilling Week 1 of 2025 Season
Last Friday kicked off the much-anticipated high school football season in Central Florida, and it did not disappoint! Some of the leading teams in the region strutted their stuff, showing just how ready they were to tackle the competition. With seven out of the top ten teams winning their matchups, it looks like this season is going to be a nail-biter!
The Tigers Roar
First up, we have the Tigers who are clearly a force to be reckoned with. They achieved their 17th consecutive regular-season victory by stomping on Winter Park with a commanding 35-0 score. Transfer DJ Hicks made quite the impression, scoring two touchdowns, while quarterback Dereon Coleman, who’s committed to Miami, added to the scoreboard with both a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown. Their next challenge takes them against Timber Creek. It’s going to be exciting to see if they can keep their momentum going!
Royal Challenges
The Royals went head-to-head with the national powerhouse Milton from Georgia, putting up a strong fight but ultimately falling short at 24-17. Still, there was a bright spot as TFA may have solidified their starting quarterback in West Orange transfer Brian Dillard, who threw for two touchdowns. One of those TDs even pushed the Royals ahead with a 17-14 lead at one point! They’re set to host Phenix City from Alabama in their next game, so fans are eagerly awaiting that showdown.
Cocoa’s Dramatic Victory
The Cocoa Tigers, reigning state champions with three titles under their belt, showed their resilience in a nail-biting double overtime game against Merritt Island, pulling off a thrilling 30-24 win thanks to Javeon Scott’s touchdown run. Cocoa is gearing up to host Mainland on August 29, and you know that’s going to be a game to watch!
Edgewater’s Dominating Performance
Meanwhile, Edgewater, led by head coach Patrick Browning, opened their season with a bang. The Eagles dominance was on full display as they crushed Wekiva with a huge 65-8 victory. Their defense was just electric, with multiple punts blocked for touch downs and fumble recoveries adding to their spectacular scoreline.
A Comeback Story
Lake Mary executed a remarkable comeback against Miami Norland that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Trailing 29-7 at halftime, the Rams rallied back to secure a stunning 30-29 victory. Senior quarterback Noah Grubbs threw three touchdowns to transfer Barrett Schulz and even rushed for another. Next up for Lake Mary is a visit to Kissimmee Osceola.
Other Matchups
The Kowboys also had a solid start to their season, taking down Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast 35-0 in their opener. On the other hand, the Commodores faced a tough loss against Class 7A Vero Beach, falling 41-31 after star quarterback Joseph Allen suffered a dislocated knee early in the game. However, freshman X’Zavier Corbin stood out, scoring three touchdowns, which includes two rushing and one from the kickoff return.
In more news, DeLand’s sophomore running back Taihj Moore is clearly a player to watch as he scored a touchdown, adding to last season’s impressive stats of over 1,380 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. Dr. Phillips and Seminole both faced losses, but there’s always next week to turn things around!

As we look forward to next week, fans won’t want to miss any of the action. The anticipation is palpable as teams prepare for another round of hard-hitting football. Keep your eyes on those updates, and let’s cheer on our favorite teams in Central Florida!
