Exciting Times for Local High School Girls Tennis Teams in Wilmington

Wilmington is buzzing with excitement as the local high school girls tennis teams gear up for a competitive season in the Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference (SBAAC). Each team is working hard, ready to swing into action and showcase their talent on the courts.

Who’s Who on the Teams

Representing East Clinton High School, the girls tennis squad is packed with talent, including Myia Spurlock, Karlee Wareham, Josi Balon, Rylee Kempton, and Madisyn Lawson. Not to forget, Mallory Thomason, Halle Bradley, and Clara Vanderstar, who were a bit shy during photo time.

Over at Blanchester High School, the court is lit up with players like Madison Taylor, Lilly Bates, Tatum Strange, Grace Jones, and Abby Thomas. Jenna Pelosi had something else to do and missed the group shot.

Wilmington High School also flaunts a strong lineup featuring Haylee Ilg, Nyomi Blackburn, Kiley Comberger, Abbie Hubbard, Jenna Pletcher, Adriana Eltzroth, Annie Maher, Avah Myburgh, Avery Byrd, and Morgan Mertz. These players are all set to give their best as the season kicks off.

Past Victories and Great Opportunities

Reflecting on last year, Clinton-Massie stole the spotlight with an impressive 9-1 record in the American Division, securing first place, while Georgetown dominated the National Division with a perfect 10-0 record. It certainly feels good to win, and the teams are looking forward to replicating that success this season!

In terms of overall performance, Wilmington wrapped up the season with a solid 10-7 record, including a 6-4 finish in the American Division. Blanchester held its ground with a respectable 6-4 record in the National Division, while East Clinton ended up with a 4-6 record. Clinton-Massie’s championship win marked their third consecutive season of holding the SBAAC title – quite the achievement!

Talent Shines Bright

Among the stars, Blanchester’s Lilly Bates earned the title of returning National Division Player of the Year. She dazzled on the courts with an 8-2 league record and a 19-8 overall score, making her mark by winning the league tournament. Coach Sexton, who has a fabulous record of 167-114 in his 19 seasons, is leading Blanchester again this year, hoping to rebuild after losing key players to graduation.

Blanchester will need to find new talent to fill in some roster spots to maintain their competitiveness. Meanwhile, Clinton-Massie is faced with the challenge of replacing six graduated seniors, including some stellar players who left big shoes to fill after going 7-0 in league play last season. Head coach Julie Kirby is riding the high of winning her third consecutive Coach of the Year honor, and she remains focused on cultivating new talent.

Exciting Changes at East Clinton and Wilmington

Over at East Clinton, head coach Doug Stehlin is back for his 10th season, and there’s positive news this year, as they have nine players signed up, a significant increase that sparks excitement. Last season, players like Stephanie Lambert at second singles and the dynamic doubles team of Abigail Prater and Josi Balon had commendable records of 6-4 each.

Coming back to Wilmington, coach Doug Cooper is entering his 14th season with a stellar record of 101-27. However, this year presents a unique challenge as the team lost six seniors. Jenna Pletcher and Kiley Comberger are stepping up their game and will be pivotal as they navigate this transition into more significant roles within the squad.

Setting the Stage for Intense Matches

As the season unfolds, the competition is set to be intense. The East Cincinnati Conference and Southern Buckeye Conference tournaments promise thrilling matches among local teams. Fans can expect to see players shine and achieve remarkable individual championships as talent erupts from not just our local teams but also from those in Goshen, New Richmond, and Amelia.

With the courts ready, spirits high, and all teams looking to make their mark, it’s going to be a tennis season to remember in Wilmington! Let’s cheer on our girls as they embark on this new journey filled with hard work, teamwork, and hopefully, lots of victories!
