Excitement Builds in Georgia for the 2025 High School Football Season
It’s that time of year again, folks! In just under two weeks, Georgia high school football will kick off its much-anticipated 2025 regular season, and the energy is electric. From rising stars to fierce rivalries, some of the best high school football programs in the nation call the Peach State home. According to the On3 Massey Ratings, an impressive 11 of Georgia’s teams are among the top-100 programs in America!
Buckle Up, Buford!
Let’s start with the legendary Buford Wolves, a team that has been on quite the winning streak, boasting over two decades of double-digit-win seasons. Last year, they made it to the Class 6A state semifinals but were unfortunately ousted by Carrollton. This year, they’re hopeful to turn that around and are eager to showcase their talents, kicking off their first game against Milton on August 14.
This season, the Wolves will be led by some outstanding players on both offense and defense. Expect to see a great performance from quarterback DJ Hunter, who is already committed to Kentucky, alongside offensive tackle Ben Mubenga (Arkansas), tight end Dream Rashad (Purdue), and running back Dylan McCoy (NC State). They are joined by quarterback Dayton Raiola, who is headed to Nebraska, and four-star interior lineman Graham Houston (Georgia).
The Wolves’ defense is no less impressive, featuring stars like four-star edge rushers Bryce Perry-Wright (Texas A&M) and Dre Quinn (Clemson), along with four-star safety Tyriq Green (Georgia) and other strong guys like safety Jax Pope (Mississippi State) and linebacker CJ Sibley.
The Mighty Carrollton Trojans
Next up, meet the Carrollton Trojans. After an incredible start to their 2024 season, winning their first 14 games and reaching the Class 6A state championship, they’ll be looking to bounce back strong after their loss to Grayson. Their first game this year is against Woodward Academy on August 15.
Carrollton’s offense will be led by quarterback Mason Holtzclaw and features top talent like four-star wide receiver Ryan Mosley (Georgia), three-star running back Kimauri Farmer (Liberty), and three-star wideout Peyton Zachary (UNLV). They’ll have to rely on a solid defense as well, with top players like four-star cornerback Dorian Barney (Michigan) and three-star linebacker CJ Gamble (Georgia Tech) keeping the opponent’s scoring at bay.
Milton Eagles Soaring High
Let’s not forget about the reigning champs, the Milton Eagles, who completed a flawless 15-0 season in 2024, lifting the Class 5A state championship trophy after a thrilling win over Langston Hughes. As if that wasn’t enough, they also took home the 2023 Class 7A state title, boasting an impressive 25-game winning streak! This season, they will face Buford in their opener on August 14.
On the offensive side, keep an eye on quarterback Derrick Baker, alongside four-star tight end Grant Haviland and three-star wide receiver Jordan Carrasquillo. Their defense will be anchored by key players like linebacker Billy Weivoda and safety Tristan Lester.
Defending Champs Grayson Rams
Grayson Rams are gearing up to defend their title against the only team they lost to last season. Kicking off their campaign on August 15, they have star players like four-star quarterback Travis Burgess (North Carolina) and the highly sought-after five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson, Georgia’s top-ranked senior. Other notable players include wide receivers Dawson Quarterman (East Carolina) and Ty’Jae Clark.
Lee County and Others Join the Action
Let’s not overlook Lee County, who will be returning to action against Warner Robbins on August 15. Four-star prospect Jaden Upshaw will be key on offense, and look out for linebacker Gregory Batson to take charge on defense.
The ratings don’t stop there! The top high school football programs in Georgia include powerhouses like Thomas County Central, Langston Hughes, Mill Creek, North Cobb, Douglas County, and many more!
And let’s not forget, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the AJC Super 11, celebrating Georgia’s top high school football seniors. With so much talent on display, the 2025 season promises to be one for the books!
