New York City is reeling after a tragic shooting that took place near the corporate offices of the National Football League and Blackstone on Monday evening. In total, six people were shot, and five, including an NYPD officer, have been confirmed dead.

According to reports, the incident began around 6:30 p.m. when the shooter, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, entered the office building with a long rifle. It’s reported that he shot one person on the 33rd floor before turning the weapon on himself. The officer who was killed, identified as Didarul Islam, was off duty and working as part of a security detail. He served the NYPD for about three and a half years and was known to have a deep love for his city.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Tamura, who had an expired private investigator license and a documented mental health history, had recently traveled from Las Vegas to New York City via Colorado. Upon entering the city, he was seen in New Jersey just prior to the shooting. Officials indicated he had a concealed carry permit for a handgun from Las Vegas, but the motive for this tragic act remains unclear.

Witnesses reported chaotic scenes, with people evacuating the building with their hands raised. Emergency crews responded quickly to the situation, with reports of an active shooter prompting a significant law enforcement presence at the scene.

Local and state officials shared their shock and prayers for the victims and their families. New York Mayor Eric Adams and New York Governor Kathy Hochul both urged New Yorkers to avoid the area as authorities worked to secure the scene. The building houses several prominent companies, including Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan, and is located in a busy part of Manhattan.

As investigations continue, students, residents, and city officials are left processing this senseless act of violence that has shaken their community. According to city officials, there is currently no active threat to the public.
