New York City experienced a tragic incident on Monday evening when a shooting occurred at a midtown Manhattan building known for housing the NFL offices and several financial firms. The event resulted in four deaths, including that of an off-duty police officer.

Authorities identified the gunman as Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, who reportedly had a documented mental health history. After committing the shooting, he took his own life. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated, “We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location” at 345 Park Ave., a prominent building home to many high-profile tenants.

The deceased officer was Didarul Islam, 36, a dedicated member of the NYPD who recently immigrated from Bangladesh. He was described as a hero, leaving behind a wife and two young children, with another child on the way. During the incident, another individual sustained critical injuries, while four others received minor injuries trying to escape.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed in a memo that one NFL employee was also seriously injured in the shooting and is currently hospitalized in stable condition. Goodell mentioned that there would be an increased security presence at the league’s offices in the following days to ensure employee safety.

The shooting began around 6:30 p.m. when Tamura exited a BMW carrying an M4 rifle, immediately targeting Officer Islam as he entered the building. Multiple eyewitnesses reported hearing rapid gunfire. One witness recounted barricading themselves with their colleagues in a conference room, stating, “We were honestly really, really scared.”

Surveillance footage captured scenes of chaos as people evacuated the building, with local residents describing the atmosphere as a “crowd panic.” First responders arrived quickly, and the city’s emergency services issued alerts about traffic disruptions in the area.

As the investigation continues, city officials are working diligently to piece together the details of this devastating event. The building, located near Grand Central Terminal, is a busy workplace, and the thought of such violence in this area has left many residents and employees shaken.
