Las Vegas Raiders Release Defensive Tackle Christian Wilkins
Las Vegas, NV – The Las Vegas Raiders have decided to part ways with defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, marking the end of his brief tenure with the team after he was signed to a lucrative deal last season. The Raiders confirmed the move in a statement released on Thursday, explaining that it was in the organization’s best interest to move on from Wilkins.
Wilkins, who was once considered among the top interior defensive linemen in the league, struggled with injuries throughout his time with the Raiders. He played only five games in the 2024 season due to a foot injury, which severely limited his impact on the field. His contract, signed last offseason, was reportedly worth $84.75 million with significant guaranteed money, but the situation has turned complicated.
As a result of his release, there is some uncertainty regarding whether Wilkins will receive the remaining $35.2 million of his guaranteed contract money. The Raiders released him under the designation of terminated vested veteran. Following his release, Wilkins has filed a grievance with the NFL Players Association, challenging the decision.
The Raiders emphasized that with no clear plan for Wilkins’ return to play, they need to prepare for the upcoming season without him. In their statement, they mentioned, “This franchise has a Commitment to Excellence on and off the field. This transaction is necessary for the entire organization to move forward.”
Wilkins, who had 22½ career sacks since being drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the first round, will be looking to continue his career elsewhere after leaving Las Vegas. The defensive tackle was an important player during his time with Miami before moving to the Raiders, and his future remains uncertain as he navigates this latest development.
As the Raiders continue to strategize for the new season, the team moves forward with hopes of bolstering their roster and returning to competitiveness.
