Miami Gets a New Associate Head Coach for Men’s Basketball!
Exciting news from Miami, as St. Thomas University has just announced the hiring of Jacob Shaw as the Associate Head Coach for their men’s basketball program. With nearly two decades of coaching under his belt, Shaw brings a wealth of experience and a robust knowledge of the South Florida basketball scene.
A Local Basketball Influencer
Jacob Shaw is not just any coach; he’s the founder of MiamiDadeBBHoops.com, a platform dedicated to covering all things high school basketball in Miami-Dade County and across Florida. This means he’s well-versed in spotting talent and fostering basketball skills among young players. His commitment to nurturing young athletes makes him a perfect fit for the program at St. Thomas University, where player development will be one of his primary focuses.
Coaching Experience That Speaks Volumes
Shaw returns to the Sun Conference after a successful stint as an Assistant Coach at Florida Memorial University during the 2021-22 season. While he was there, he played a vital role in guiding the team to the prestigious 2022 Sun Conference Championship and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. Under his supervision, Florida Memorial ranked sixth in the nation for blocks per game, averaging an impressive 5.0, and was also 16th for rebounds per game with a solid 41.5. Those stats certainly highlight Shaw’s ability to cultivate a strong, competitive team.
Before stepping into the collegiate coaching world, Shaw made a name for himself as a head boys’ basketball coach at Miami Beach Senior High School from 2013 to 2021. During that time, he led his team to not one, but two regional finals and they made it to the district championships twice as well. His dedication to developing young talent resulted in 26 of his players advancing to collegiate athletics, including two who landed spots at NCAA Division I institutions—one of whom was among the top five high school players nationwide. What a track record!
Adept in Girls’ Basketball Too!
Shaw doesn’t just bring experience from boys’ basketball! Before coaching boys’ teams, he took charge of the girls’ basketball program at Miami Beach Senior High from 2008 to 2012. His tenure was also marked by success here, as he led the girls’ team to three regional finals and secured three district titles. He effectively developed two players who would go on to play at NCAA Division I schools, along with an astonishing 13 others continuing their basketball careers at different colleges.
From Detroit to Miami: A True Journey
Originally hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Shaw was an All-City basketball player at Detroit Pershing High School where he not only showcased his skills but also helped his team achieve an astounding 88-9 record and win four consecutive Eastside Conference championships. He began his collegiate playing career at Bismarck State College in North Dakota, where he quickly gained recognition as one of the country’s outstanding junior college players. Later, he transferred to the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota, and under his leadership, the team made it to the NAIA Final Four in 2004.
Educated and Committed
Shaw holds a bachelor’s degree in wellness, equipping him with both the educational background and the passion for enhancing the health and fitness of his players. Currently, he resides in Miami, Florida, while his family, including his parents and six siblings, still call Michigan home.
The Future Looks Bright
As Jacob Shaw steps into his new role as Associate Head Coach at St. Thomas University, everyone is excited to see how he will contribute to the basketball program and help mold the next generation of players. With a strong emphasis on recruiting, player development, and scouting, there’s no doubt this new chapter will be one filled with promise and potential both on and off the court.
