California High School Football Update: Exciting Times Ahead for 2025 Season!

Hello there, football fans in Sacramento and beyond! Get ready to mark your calendars because the thrilling world of California high school football is about to kick off, and it promises an action-packed season. Here’s everything you need to know about what’s been happening and what’s on the horizon for 2025.

Summer Practices and Upcoming Dead Period

High school football in California truly is a year-round adventure, especially in the vibrant greater Sacramento region. The summer workouts and 7-on-7 passing leagues recently wrapped up, but don’t worry; the action isn’t over yet! The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has set a mandatory dead period from July 1 to July 14. During this time, there won’t be any on-campus practices or coach-athlete contact, which is designed to give all the coaches and athletes some valuable downtime to recharge.

After a short break, from July 15 to July 27, high school teams can get back to it, but with some restrictions. They’ll engage in limited activities like conditioning and drills, although full contact and equipment use are off the table. Mark your calendars because the excitement officially resumes on July 28, when official football practice kicks off.

Kickoff and Key Matchups

As everyone gets warmed up, intrasquad scrimmages are slated for August 8, with inter-team scrimmages set for August 15-16. The first game of the season is on August 22, where the defending CIF Sac-Joaquin Section champion, Grant High School, will host Folsom High School, the four-time defending section Division I champion. Talk about a matchup to keep an eye on!

But wait, there’s more — on September 19, Grant will host the powerhouse De La Salle of Concord, an exciting game that was rescheduled after an earlier cancellation. You won’t want to miss that one! In addition, Grant will take on top teams from Fresno, starting with Central on August 29 and Clovis East on September 12. They’ll even venture to Santa Rosa on September 5 to face off against Cardinal Newman.

Grant’s nonleague schedule will wrap up against the defending CIF state champions, Lincoln, in San Diego on September 27. They’re set to play six nonleague games this season due to forfeits from Metro League teams Kennedy and McClatchy, which cited concerns about competitiveness.

League Opponents and More

In addition to their nonleague challenges, Grant will battle it out with league opponents like Antelope, Destiny Christian of Sacramento, and West Park of Roseville. Each team has its own roster of talented players, making for a highly competitive league!

Following their season opener against Grant, Folsom will clash with Serra of San Mateo, a team that has made waves by competing in the CIF State Open Division championship recently. It seems there’s no shortage of excitement in these early matchups!

Transfer Tracker Buzz

17,000 transfers statewide! Players who transfer with their family can immediately step onto the field, while others may have to sit out for a bit. Important dates for transfer eligibility include September 29 for Southern Section players and September 25 for City Section athletes.

Some notable transfers are already generating buzz, including a running back moving from Loyola to Orange Lutheran, who is heading into his senior year committed to Northwestern, and a defensive back making the jump from Loyola to Sierra Canyon who has received a nod from USC. With a mix of seniors and juniors switching schools, the dynamics are sure to shift this season.

The Countdown Begins!
