Exciting Times Ahead in Durango: First-Ever Alumni Soccer Game Approaches!
As the summer moves along, the Durango High School boys soccer team is gearing up for an unforgettable event that’s sure to create a buzz in the community! With just two months left until the high school season kicks off, the anticipation is building for the team’s first-ever alumni soccer game on July 19.
Get Set for Kick-off!
mark your calendars because the event starts at 11 a.m. at Durango High School. This unique matchup will not only celebrate the love for soccer but also foster connections between current students and those who once donned the team colors. This is a great chance to relive old friendships and rekindle the spirit of competition on the field.
During the alumni game, former players will lace up their cleats and take to the field in a format of 11 vs. 11. It promises to be a fun, competitive atmosphere as alumni face off against each other. But that’s not all! After the exciting match, the current players will have their own scrimmage to showcase their skills.
Building Bridges and Learning Opportunities
What makes this event truly special is that it’s an opportunity for current players to learn from those who walked the same halls and played the same sport. Alumni who have played at various levels often carry valuable insights and experiences that can help guide the younger team members. It’s a wonderful chance for mentorship, camaraderie, and golf-tee banter!
A Coach with a Passion
Adding to the excitement, Head Coach Sean Ackerman—a former player himself who knows the ins and outs of the game—is enthusiastic about the matchup and plans to join in the fun by playing alongside his coaching staff. It’s great to see coaches engaging with players in such a dynamic and interactive way. Not only does it reinforce team spirit, but it also allows everyone to see the vibrant growth of the program.
In the event that the numbers don’t quite add up for an optimal full-sized game, the organization has plans in place to adjust the format to 9 vs. 9 or tailor it based on the number of participants. No matter the setup, the excitement will be palpable!
Support the Cause!
There is a modest entry fee of $5 for players, which goes directly to supporting the soccer program. These funds are crucial for covering essential travel costs including hotel fees for playoffs and ensuring that players have nutritious meals during their games. It’s a win-win: players get to play and enjoy the event while contributing to a worthy cause!
Make Your Mark!
For any former players interested in dusting off their cleats and joining in the fun, reach out to Coach Ackerman via email at sackerman@durangoschools.org to confirm your participation. Keep in mind that all participants must sign a waiver to play on the high school field. Your chance to be a part of history is just an email away!
Looking Back at Success
The Durango Demons boys soccer program has a stellar record since 2014, consistently winning 10 or more games each season except for the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. Over the past four years, the team has posted an impressive combined record of 54 wins, 9 losses, and 6 draws. Last year was no different; under Coach Ackerman’s leadership, the Demons boasted a record of 12-3-3 overall and 7-1-2 in the 5A/4A Southwestern League. The team made it to the 4A state quarterfinals but experienced a tough loss against Mullen, finishing the season strong nonetheless.
This upcoming alumni game is not just about soccer; it’s about community, continuity, and celebrating a shared love for the sport. So, if you’re an alumnus of Durango High School’s soccer program, grab those old jersey shorts and relive the glory days. We can’t wait to see you there!
