Las Cruces, New Mexico: A Star Athlete Shines Bright
In a remarkable achievement this month, Corbin Coombs, a talented senior from Organ Mountain High School, has been named the 2024-25 Gatorade New Mexico Boys Track and Field Player of the Year. This prestigious honor, awarded on June 25, is not just a one-time feat but a back-to-back accolade for this dedicated athlete, marking his second consecutive year receiving such recognition. Talk about a winning streak!
Record-Breaking Performances
This past season has been nothing short of phenomenal for Coombs. He donned his running shoes and broke multiple state records, sending shockwaves through the track and field community. Perhaps most impressively, he set a record for the fastest mile at the Millrose Games back in February. His talent didn’t stop there; at the NMAA 5A state track meet held in May, Coombs smashed state records in both the 800 and 3,200 races!
With a lightning-fast time of 8:52.22 in the 3,200 race, he earned himself a ranking of No. 23 nationally. As if that wasn’t enough to showcase his prowess, he also clocked in at 1:50.33 for the 800 race, ranking him No. 37 nationally. Not only did he excel personally, but his stellar performances played a significant role in helping the Knights’ boys’ team secure a second place finish at the state meet.
Competition Highlights
Further proving his exceptional talent, Coombs also put forth a personal best in the 3,000 race at the Nike Outdoor Nationals on June 21, finishing first with a time of 8:03.58. To top it all off, he achieved a remarkable time of 14:04.49 in the 5,000 race at the same meet on June 19, which is recognized as the fastest time ever run at the Nike Outdoor Nationals. Just wow!
A Stellar Track Record
Throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons, Coombs racked up a staggering total of 22 event wins across meets for both his high school team and club teams, namely the Las Cruces Sun Dragons and Nike Elite Club. His achievements didn’t end there, as he was also crowned the District 3-5A champion in cross-country for the 2024 season.
A Well-Rounded Student Athlete
Coombs is not just an extraordinary athlete; he’s also made significant contributions to his community. His humanitarian efforts are impressive and align beautifully with Gatorade’s dedication to honoring athletes who give back. Among other service projects, Coombs engaged in expeditions to Uganda and Guatemala, where he helped construct schools and supported clean water initiatives, even contributing to the building of a medical clinic in Guatemala.
Back on home turf, he volunteered at local road races and track events for the Senior Olympics, served as a student coach at a youth track and field camp, and participated in a Las Cruces city beautification project. All of this while maintaining an outstanding A average throughout his time at Organ Mountain High School! What a role model!
Looking Ahead
As he prepares to graduate, Coombs has big plans for the future. He intends to continue his running career collegiately at Wake Forest after completing a two-year mission with the Latter-day Saints. His prospect of carrying his talent to the next level is thrilling for many in the Las Cruces community.
In addition to Coombs’ incredible achievement, he is the third Las Cruces athlete to receive a Gatorade state honor for the 2024-25 season, alongside Mia Barela in girls’ soccer and Addison Massey in volleyball. It’s clear that Las Cruces is fostering some fantastic athletic talent!
As the stellar year wraps up, there’s no doubt that Corbin Coombs will remain a name to watch both on and off the track. His combination of athletic excellence and community spirit truly makes him a standout star, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for him!
