New York City is set to host a significant event on December 4, 2025, as Roger Goodell, the Commissioner of the National Football League (NFL), will be honored with the prestigious Award for Public Service by the Ad Council. This recognition comes during the Ad Council’s 71st annual Public Service Award Dinner, held at the Glasshouse, a prominent venue in the city.

Lisa Sherman, President and CEO of the Ad Council, highlighted Goodell’s transformative leadership, stating, “Roger’s visionary leadership has not only transformed the NFL into a global force for good, but also elevated the power of sports to unite, inspire and drive meaningful change.” This award signifies the NFL’s extensive commitment to community and public service, showcasing how impactful actions can often occur off the field.

Goodell’s tenure as Commissioner began on September 1, 2006, but his involvement with the NFL dates back to 1982. Throughout the years, he has held several key positions, including the league’s first Chief Operating Officer. Under his leadership, the NFL has experienced considerable growth, expanding its global footprint and increasing fan engagement while prioritizing player health and safety.

In addition to traditional viewing options, Goodell has negotiated numerous long-term media deals that introduced innovations like Thursday Night Football on streaming platforms and partnerships for the NFL Sunday Ticket with YouTube. The league remains widely accessible, with nearly 90 percent of games broadcasted on free television.

Beyond the business side, Goodell is an advocate for social issues, championing initiatives aimed at enhancing mental health, promoting education, and supporting social justice across various communities. The NFL has been a proud partner of the Ad Council for over 25 years, contributing to major campaigns focused on important public health messages, including the COVID-19 Vaccine Education Initiative.

Goodell expressed his gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the NFL’s role in using its platform to make a long-lasting difference. “On behalf of the NFL, it’s an honor to be recognized by the Ad Council,” he said.

The Public Service Award Dinner is not only a celebration of public service but also serves as the Ad Council’s largest fundraising event, assisting their ongoing social impact campaigns. The 2024 Dinner raised over $9.2 million, showcasing the critical support received from the media, marketing, and advertising industries.

Previous award recipients include notable figures such as CEOs of major corporations who have made significant contributions to public service. For this year’s event, co-chairs will include Rita Ferro of The Walt Disney Company and Tim Ellis, the CMO of the NFL.

This honor for Goodell highlights the important intersection of sports, community service, and leadership, ensuring that the NFL continues its legacy of making an impact both on and off the field.
