Oregon Pitcher Santiago Garcia Enters Transfer Portal
In Eugene, Oregon, left-handed pitcher Santiago Garcia has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal, marking a significant change for the Oregon Ducks baseball team. After one season with the Ducks, Garcia is seeking new opportunities as a college athlete.
Garcia transferred to Oregon from the junior college level, where he previously showcased his talent at Central Arizona Community College. In his recent season with Oregon, he made 22 appearances, finishing with an impressive 3-0 record and an earned run average (ERA) of 4.18. Known for his role as a relief pitcher, he also recorded four saves and struck out 38 batters over 28 innings of work, while walking just 18.
The Ducks had a strong season, finishing with a record of 42-16 and earning the No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately, the team’s journey ended prematurely with back-to-back losses in the regional playoffs, leaving fans disappointed. Garcia is the twelfth player from Oregon to enter the transfer portal this offseason and is one of eight pitchers who have decided to seek new paths. Notable names amongst them include Sammy Cova and Cole Stokes.
Head coach Mark Wasikowski will be looking to rebuild his team as they prepare for the upcoming season. The Ducks are optimistic about bouncing back from the previous season’s early exit. With several players leaving, it will be essential for Oregon to find replacements through the transfer portal.
The NCAA transfer portal currently has two windows for players: the main window, which is open now, and a secondary window that opens for 15 days in December. As of now, over 3,179 players have entered the portal, creating a highly competitive environment for college baseball teams looking to fill gaps in their rosters.
College baseball is unique, with challenges around scholarship distribution that impact coaching and players. NCAA Division I baseball teams have between 11 and 12 scholarships available, even though rosters often exceed that number. This situation requires coaches to manage their current players and incoming talent effectively.
As Oregon prepares for the next season, the focus will be not only on filling the gaps left by departing players but also on the strategies needed to ensure a successful and balanced roster.
