The University of Massachusetts Amherst is thrilled to announce the addition of Miles Smyczek, a talented distance swimmer from beautiful Arizona, to their swimming roster starting in the fall of 2025. This exciting move marks a new chapter for Smyczek and the Minutemen swimming team, as they prepare to welcome such an accomplished athlete to their ranks.
Diving Into Success
Miles Smyczek, who recently wrapped up his high school swimming career at Tucson High Magnet School, has proven himself to be quite the versatile swimmer. He’s ready to make a splash in the 1650 freestyle and 400 Individual Medley events, and fans are eagerly anticipating his contributions to the team. Prior to his time at Tucson High, Miles showcased his skills at Cienega High School in Vail, Arizona, where he competed fiercely for three years.
Year-Round Training
Dedicated to his craft, Smyczek trains year-round with Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics, where he specializes in freestyle, butterfly, and IM events. His hard work truly paid off recently at the 2025 Speedo Sectionals held in Austin, where he achieved remarkable personal and season-best times. Notable finishes included landing 23rd in the 400 IM with a personal best of 4:06.10 and finishing 28th in the 500 freestyle with a season-best time of 4:37.52. He also impressively competed in the 1000 freestyle (9:51.90), 1650 freestyle (16:13.53), and 200 butterfly (1:55.27 – SB).
High School Highlights
With incredible talent, Smyczek is a proud nine-time Arizona high school state finalist. His achievements at the 2023 AIA Division II State Championship included a fantastic 3rd place finish in both the 200 freestyle (1:43.50) and the 500 freestyle (4:36.65), setting new lifetime bests. To cap off a great season, he also helped his team secure a 6th-place finish in the 400 free relay (48.75 anchor split) and an 11th-place finish in the 200 medley relay (28.10 backstroke split).
From Wisconsin to Arizona
Before embracing the sunny skies of Arizona, Smyczek spent six years in Wisconsin, swimming with Ozaukee Aquatics in Mequon from 2014 to 2020. This pool experience has undoubtedly shaped him into a fierce competitor. As he transitions to UMass Amherst, he looks forward to joining fellow recruits Chase Dai, Hudson Bawduniak, Bode Groh, Macek Vandermolen, Liam Hickey, Eli Panachyda, and Sota Kawahata, creating a thrilling newcomer lineup!
Looking Ahead
The UMass men’s swimming team had a commendable season, placing 6th out of 11 teams at the Atlantic 10 Championships last year. Analyzing conference championship results indicates that Smyczek would have placed 14th in the 1650 freestyle and featured in the ‘B’ final for the 400 IM. With his arrival, the Minutemen are gearing up for another competitive season.
Ready to Make a Splash
Starting in the fall, UMass will be making waves in the Missouri Valley Conference, and with athletes like Miles Smyczek on board, there’s no doubt that the future is bright. Swimming fans and UMass supporters alike can look forward to an exciting fall season filled with talent, hard work, and a whole lot of competitive spirit!
