This year’s cross country season was nothing short of thrilling, filled with record-breaking feats and heart-pounding finishes that showcased the talent of our local high school athletes.
Shining Stars of the Season
The competition was intense, with local schools demonstrating exceptional talent on the trails. The South Coast Conference (SCC) became the stage for some amazing performances, and many runners stood out from the pack. Let’s take a closer look at a few of these standout athletes:
Michael Cabral from Somerset Berkley Raiders
Junior runner Michael Cabral was a force this season. Not only was he honored as an SCC all-star, but he also played a pivotal role in helping the Raiders secure the SCC Blue Division title. Cabral finished an impressive third at the SCC championships with a personal-best time of 16:44, a time that helped him break the school record. His exceptional performance continued at the D2A championships where he finished 39th, earning him a spot as an All-State D2 runner.
Barboza, also from Somerset Berkley
Equally impressive was his teammate Barboza, another junior runner who made a mark on the season as an SCC all-star. He clocked in at 17:10 during the SCC championships, finishing 17th overall. Barboza showed consistency with a finishing position of 48th at the D2A championships, solidifying his status as a strong competitor.
Deady from the Cardinals
Moving on to the Cardinals, we have sophomore runner Deady, who made a splash by finishing 6th at the SCC championship with a notable time of 17:59. His commitment to excellence was further exemplified as he completed the MSTCA Frank Moony 5k Invitational with a personal best of 17:56.
Goff, pride of the Diman Bengals
Next up is Goff from Diman, who held the title as the No. 1 runner during dual meets. He achieved a fantastic first-place finish against Norfolk Aggie and logged a season-best 5K time of 19:34. Goff’s hard work shone through as he competed valiantly in several invitationals such as the Twilight Meet and MAC championships.
Moniz from the Hilltoppers
Moniz, a senior runner and recognized as the Big 3 Conference all-star, showcased his skills all season long. He not only earned the title of Durfee’s Most Valuable Player but also excelled by finishing in the top 50 at the MIAA Division 1 meet. With a record of winning three out of four meets and placing second in the Big 3 championship, Moniz left a significant mark.
Stephens and Rumsey making their mark
Another exciting pair, Stephen and Rumsey, also showed great promise this year. Stephen achieved a personal-best time of 18:08 and placed 8th overall at the SCC championships, while Rumsey, a senior and a Big 3 all-star, secured 9th overall at the Big 3 conference championships and has plans to attend Brown University next fall.
