San Francisco 49ers Left Tackle Trent Williams Eyes Age-40 Season

The San Francisco 49ers are gearing up for the upcoming NFL season with several changes following a disappointing showing in 2024. Despite these shifts, veteran left tackle Trent Williams is returning, and the 36-year-old has set his sights on a remarkable goal. Earlier this week, Williams expressed his ambition to continue his professional football journey until he reaches the age of 40.

“I would love to play until I’m 40,” Williams said. He emphasized the significance of this goal, wishing to join the rare group of players who have donned an NFL jersey at that age. “If it’s just not in my cards, it’s not in my cards,” he added, highlighting his commitment to maximizing his time in the league.

Williams has proven to be a formidable presence on the field throughout his 14 seasons. He has consistently ranked among the elite offensive linemen, earning 11 Pro Bowl selections, which were interrupted only last season due to a lingering ankle injury. He achieved an impressive PFF grade of 85.6 last year, ranking sixth among tackles and allowing only one sack.

Despite missing several games last season, Williams believes he has more to contribute. He mentioned his willingness to do whatever it takes to keep performing at a high level, stating, “I’m going to do everything possible to play as long and to put a good product of football out there.” His current contract keeps him with the 49ers until the end of the 2026 season, and he is choosing to focus on the present rather than the future.

Williams explained his philosophy: “I’m paid, people count on me to be here now. We got goals and aspirations as a team.” He is determined to stay focused on helping the team succeed rather than worrying about retirement until it is necessary to consider that transition.

As Williams prepares to kick off his age-37 season in less than three months, the 49ers will rely on his expertise and leadership on the offensive line, filling a critical role that he has held for the past five years. For now, Williams shows no signs of slowing down.
