High School Sports Achievements Shine Bright in the 2024-25 Season

As we wrap up the thrilling 2024-25 high school sports season, let’s take a moment to revel in the extraordinary achievements across various states. Communities from Cook, Lake, DuPage, Kane, McHenry, and Kendall counties experienced an incredible showcase of athletic skill, determination, and teamwork from young athletes dedicated to making their mark.

An Unforgettable Year of Championships

Over the past year, local high schools not only demonstrated their relentless spirit but also brought home a remarkable total of 18 team state titles. It’s a proud time to be a part of these vibrant communities, with schools like Downers Grove North and Barrington taking home state titles in Class 3A Boys and Girls Cross Country, and Hinsdale Central and Rosary doing the same in Class 3A Boys and Girls Swimming.

In addition, Montini claimed the esteemed Class 3A state football title, while the Broncos girls basketball team fought hard to win their own 3A basketball championship. For boys basketball, Benet rose to the occasion and secured the 4A boys basketball title. Just when you thought it couldn’t get more exciting, Fremd blazed a trail as the very first recipients of the IHSA’s flag football state title.

Individual Glory and Groundbreaking Records

In addition to team achievements, the area saw a total of 53 individual state titles claimed by local athletes. Among them, Barrington sophomore Mia Sirois truly emerged as a rising star. She not only clinched the 3A cross country title but also dominated in track and field, setting a new 3A record in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:01.12 — an impressive feat!

Meanwhile, Marmion’s senior golfer Regan Konen celebrated a fantastic achievement with her second straight Class 2A golf title, proving she is a force to be reckoned with both on and off the course.

Swimming and Water Polo Domination

When it came to swimming, our local champions made waves — literally! The boys swimming team from Hinsdale Central even set an NFHS national record, finishing the 200-yard medley relay in a jaw-dropping 1:26.75. On the water polo front, the Stevenson girls team has every reason to celebrate a perfect record of 36-0, marking their third consecutive state title!

Coaching Milestones and Celebrations

In coaching history, Elk Grove’s softball coach Ken Grams reached an amazing milestone, achieving his 1,045th victory — shattering the IHSA record! This dazzling accomplishment is a testament to the hard work and dedication from both the athletes and coaches that shape our future stars.

It was also a year of wins beyond county lines. The 2024-25 Iowa High School Sports Awards recognized over 300 athletes, celebrating their hard-earned successes. Notably, the first-ever sanctioned boys volleyball state champs in Minnesota emerged this year, with the Eden Prairie Eagles defeating the Rogers Royals 3-2 in a historic match.
