Tri-Lakes Golfers Shine Bright at State Championships
The beautiful city of Churchville recently played host to the New York State Public High School Golf Championships on June 8-9, 2025, bringing together some of the finest young talent from around the state. Amid the stunning greens of Mill Creek Golf Club, four eager competitors from the Tri-Lakes region teed off and showcased their skills against some tough competition.
Representing Tupper Lake were two outstanding young men: Wyatt Trudeau, an eighth-grader, and Ashton Clark, a senior. Wyatt led the charge for the Tri-Lakes golfers, finishing with an impressive tied 60th place after scoring a total of 162, with a consistent performance of 81 on both days. This is a remarkable feat for someone so young, hinting at a bright future in the world of golf.
Ashton Clark also gave it his all, finishing with a score of 178, landing him in a tied 91st position. His day one performance of 84 followed by a 94 on day two, showed grit and determination, especially as this was his final state championship as a high school athlete. It’s always tough to say goodbye to high school sports, but Ashton certainly left it all on the course.
From Lake Placid came Carver Bell, a talented sophomore who secured a tied 68th finish with a total score of 164, shooting 81 on day one followed by 83 the next day. This marked another successful journey to the state championships for Carver, who has been a regular in this prestigious tournament.
Lastly, Ryan McGinnis-Theis, a fellow sophomore representing Saranac Lake, finished with a combined score of 170, placing him in a tied 81st position. Ryan’s day one score of 82 was noteworthy but he faced a bit of a challenge on the second day, registering an 88.
In terms of overall performance, the best golfer from Section VII was Noah Wells from Ticonderoga, who made a mark with a score of 161, finishing tied for 55th place. Meanwhile, golfers from Section X performed well too. Ian VanWagner from Potsdam took 47th place with a score of 157, and Matthew Daniels from Clifton-Fine followed close behind in 49th place with 158.
The big winner of the tournament was Jackson Saroney from Jamesville-Dewitt, who claimed the state title with a sensational score of 10-under par 132, a remarkable achievement that highlighted his exceptional skills. He shot 67 on the first day and followed up with an even more impressive 65 on day two. Right behind him in the standings were CJ Strong and Joe Carey, both of whom tied for second place with combined scores of 138.
The path to this prestigious state tournament is filled with challenges. Ryan McGinnis-Theis earned his spot during the Section VII Championships held at Craig Wood Golf Course on May 29-30. With a solid score of 160 (77 and 83), he finished third overall on the first day, marking a significant accomplishment for the young golfer. Likewise, Carver Bell secured his spot with a strong performance at the Section VII Championships, where he consistently ranks among the best.
The Saranac Lake team showed off their talent as well, placing second overall in the team competition at the Section VII Championships, only trailing Peru’s impressive score of 308. Meanwhile, golfers like Noah Hastings and Jonah Peckham rounded out the team’s efforts, scoring 176 and 170, respectively.
Saranac Lake’s golf coach, Zach Dupree, expressed pride in McGinnis-Theis’s achievement, which marks a significant milestone — the first time in eight years a Red Storm golfer qualified for the state tournament. As we take a moment to applaud the efforts of Wyatt, Ashton, Carver, and Ryan, their journey at the championships not only highlights their talent but also showcases the rich golfing talent coming from the Tri-Lakes region. Here’s to many more successful endeavors on the green!
