Excitement Grows as High School Baseball Playoffs Heat Up
It’s that time of year again in Hamilton, where the high school baseball season is wrapping up, and fans are buzzing with anticipation. The sectional finals are just around the corner, with public schools battling it out on Thursday and non-public schools gearing up for their showdowns on Friday.
Mark your calendars because the state finals for non-public schools will take place on Wednesday, June 11, and the big public school finals will be happening just a few days later, on Saturday, June 14. Both of these thrilling events are set to unfold at Veterans Park in Mercer County, and you can bet that the atmosphere will be electric!
Iona Prep’s Road to the Finals
One of the standout teams this season has been Iona Prep. The players have truly shone with a remarkable 23-win regular season, earning them the No. 3 seed in the Class AA tournament. They recently celebrated a solid victory against fifth-seeded St. Peter’s, winning 4-0 in the CHSAA Class AA semifinal on June 5. This win was highlighted by an impressive shutout from pitcher Brandon Stabile and two clutch RBIs from Jordan Goldstein.
Now, all eyes are on the upcoming match against defending champions Archbishop Molloy, happening on Friday, June 6, at 7:15 p.m. at Fordham University. If Iona Prep comes out on top, they will face a second game on Saturday, June 7, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John’s University. The quest for their first city championship since 2022 is on, and they’re ready to give their all against tough competition!
The Gaels previously faced Archbishop Molloy and lost 10-5, which only adds to the stakes of this rematch. However, the team has shown resilience, especially after upsetting the top-seeded St. Joseph by the Sea 7-1 in a must-win game led by pitcher Shane Jelenevsky.
Springboro’s Standout Season
Meanwhile, over in Ohio, the Springboro High School baseball team has also made waves by clinching the OHSAA Division I, Region 4 championship. They pulled off an exciting win against 2024 state champions Mason, finishing the game with a score of 8-6 on June 5. This victory has sent them straight to the Division I state semifinals on June 14 in Canton.
Springboro hasn’t won a regional championship since 2019, making this victory sweet as syrup as they built an early 8-2 lead and held off a late-game rally from Mason. The game even faced a two-hour weather delay, but nothing could dull their enthusiasm!
Okemos Makes Its Mark
In Michgan, Okemos High School is generating excitement as well, achieving a regional semifinal victory over Battle Creek Lakeview with a score of 7-3. They now advance to face Hartland in the regional finals on June 7. Okemos jumped on the scoreboard early with a 4-0 lead and managed to keep their momentum throughout the game, despite some scoring from Lakeview.
The ace pitcher Sebastian Blair delivered an outstanding performance, pitching a complete game for the win. This win also marks the second consecutive year that Lakeview has fallen to Okemos in the regional semifinals—a streak that must sting for Lakeview but is fabulous for Okemos!
With all these thrilling matchups on the horizon, there’s no denying that high school baseball is in full swing. We’re in for a treat with the state finals just around the corner, showcasing some of the best young talent in the region. As we cheer on our favorite teams, let’s soak in the excitement and camaraderie that comes with this sport!
