Detroit Lions Center Frank Ragnow Announces Retirement
Detroit, MI – The Detroit Lions are facing a major change after center Frank Ragnow announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday. The 29-year-old player shared the news in a heartfelt social media post, stating that it was time to prioritize his health and the future of his family.
Ragnow’s decision marks the end of his impressive seven-season career, during which he became a cornerstone of the Lions’ offensive line. Ragnow mentioned, “These past couple of months have been very trying as I’ve come to the realization that my football journey is ending and I’m officially retiring from the NFL.” He went on to express his gratitude towards the Lions organization and the fans, emphasizing the honor he felt in representing his team.
Drafted in the first round in 2018, Ragnow quickly made his mark in the league. He was recognized as a two-time All-Pro and earned four Pro Bowl nods, including three consecutive selections in recent seasons. He transitioned from left guard to center in 2019 and thrived, playing hard in the interior of the offensive line. However, Ragnow struggled with numerous injuries, which included issues with his pectoral muscle, knee, and foot. Despite these challenges, he showcased remarkable tenacity, often returning to the field soon after injury.
The Lions now have a significant gap to fill in their offensive line after Ragnow’s departure. Fortunately, general manager Brad Holmes prepared for such situations by enhancing the team’s depth in recent drafts. Players like Tate Ratledge and Miles Frazier were selected to bolster the interior offensive line, and veteran Graham Glasgow may be shifted to center, where he has experience. Young talents like Ratledge have already begun training at center, indicating the team’s readiness to adapt.
As the Lions enter the offseason, they face the challenge of rebuilding their offensive scheme after the exit of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Jared Goff, the Lions’ quarterback, will need to adjust as he works with new players and dynamics come training camp.
The shift in the Lions’ lineup opens up a conversation about their future strategies, with all eyes now watching how they respond to these critical changes. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, Ragnow’s contributions will surely be missed, but Detroit is looking to find a way forward without their Pro Bowl center.
