Omaha Welcomes Creighton Bluejays for NCAA Tournament
Omaha, NE – The Creighton Bluejays are gearing up to open their NCAA Tournament bid against rival Kansas this Saturday, May 31. The announcement was made during a live broadcast on ESPN2 on Monday morning, which excited not only the players but also many loyal fans who gathered at DJ’s Dugout, just a short walk from Charles Schwab Field, the venue for the College World Series.
This is a significant moment for the Bluejays as it marks their 12th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. Under the leadership of head coach Ed Servais, who is retiring after this season, this will be the sixth trip to the tournament for the team since 2005. Creighton secured their spot in the NCAA tournament last weekend by winning the BIG EAST Championship with a 7-4 victory over Connecticut in Mason, Ohio.
The Bluejays impressed throughout the conference championships, going a perfect 3-0 and finishing as the BIG EAST regular-season champions with a 17-4 record this season. They have been on a strong run lately, winning seven consecutive games and 13 of their last 14 matches.
Creighton’s success this season is backed by some standout players, including Dominic Cancellieri, the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, with a 1.94 ERA, and Wilson Magers, the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. The team also celebrated the performance of sophomore catcher Connor Capece, who was named the Jack Kaiser Most Outstanding Player during the championship, hitting .583 with five RBIs over the weekend.
The upcoming NCAA Tournament features a double-elimination format, and teams successful in this round will move on to the Super Regionals happening from June 6-9. The excitement builds as Omaha prepares to host the College World Series from June 13-23, promising plenty of thrilling baseball ahead.
