Exciting Times for Local High Schools as AAU Teammates Become Head Coaches!
In a delightful turn of events for local basketball enthusiasts, two former AAU basketball buddies from El Capitan have stepped into the role of head coaches at their respective high schools. Yes, you guessed it—Tyler Dietz and August Tangaan are taking charge, and the community couldn’t be more thrilled!
From Teammates to Rivals
These two dynamic coaches have a long history, having played together in an AAU basketball team since they were just in second grade! Time zipped by, and before they knew it, they were competing against each other in high school. Not only did this help them hone their skills, but it also created a friendly rivalry that has spurred them both toward success. Now they embark on this exciting journey at their fellow alma maters, where they can put their skills to work.
A New Era for El Capitan’s Boys Basketball
Tyler Dietz has officially been named the new head coach for the boys basketball team at El Capitan High School. Tyler steps into this significant role following the resignation of Adrian Hurtado, who took on a new position as an associate principal at the school. Adrian leaves behind an impressive legacy, having led the Gauchos to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship game last season.
At just 25 years old, Tyler has already made waves in the coaching scene as he has been at the helm of the girls basketball team for the past four years. During his tenure, the girls team won their very first co-Central California Conference championship and boasted an impressive record of 86 wins to 28 losses!
Nonetheless, Dietz’s transition from the girls’ team to the boys’ team was no easy decision. His sister, Madysen, will be a senior this upcoming year, and many players from the girls team have been a part of his coaching journey since they were in third or fourth grade through AAU. Yet, he stressed that the boys coaching position was the only one that could lure him away from a team that he is so very proud of.
Golden Valley Gets a New Lead with August Tangaan
Meanwhile, August Tangaan has been named the third head coach for the Golden Valley boys basketball program since it opened in 1994. He is succeeding Keith Hunter and Derrick Jacobs, building on the foundation laid out by his predecessors. At the young age of 24, August is energized and ready to make his mark on the team.
A proud graduate of Golden Valley himself, August played four years of varsity basketball under the guidance of Keith Hunter. After donning the Golden Valley jersey, he spent three years as an assistant coach under Derrick Jacobs, contributing to the team’s recent co-CCC championship victory.
Now, his mission is to ensure the program remains in great hands. He aims to inject energy, strength, and leadership into the team. Basketball players can expect to see great things as he begins working closely with them during the off-season. In fact, Tangaan is already busy preparing for next season, just two weeks after the last one ended! Talk about enthusiasm!
The Future Looks Bright
Both Tyler and August are bringing their vast experiences and deep-rooted passion for basketball back to their high schools, ready to inspire the next generation of players. With their history together and competitive spirits, it will be exciting to see how they shape their programs going forward.
As the community rallies behind these local heroes, fans can anticipate a thrilling and engaging basketball season ahead at El Capitan and Golden Valley. The best part? It’s all happening right in our own backyard! Keep an eye out for updates as Tyler and August take their respective teams to new heights!
