Des Moines: A Historic Day at the Iowa High School Track and Field Championships
In a stunning display of athleticism, Quentin Nauman, a junior from Western Dubuque, has just etched his name in the record books at the Iowa High School Track and Field Championships. This young star became the very first high school athlete in the United States to achieve the incredible feat of running under 1:50 in the 800 meters and under 4:00 in the 1,600 meters—all in the same meet! Imagine that!
Nauman started off with a bang, clocking in an astonishing time of 1:49.41 to secure the gold in the 800 meters for Class 3A. But he didn’t stop there! He followed up with a mind-blowing time of 3:59.60 in the 1,600 meters, also clinching first place. But wait, there’s more! Earlier in the week, he won the 3,200 meters and played a crucial role as the anchor for the distance medley relay team, making it a perfect 4-for-4 state meet for him for the second consecutive year. Talk about a stellar performance!
Nauman’s remarkable times not only earned him individual accolades but also contributed to him establishing a new all-time Iowa record in the 800 meters. His 1,600 meters time stands proudly as the second-fastest in the nation for this season. It’s these kinds of feats that make the state championships an unmissable event!
A Record-Breaking Spectacle
This year’s state championships took place at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, bringing together a massive crowd with an impressive total attendance of 10,667 on Saturday alone, setting a new event record. Meanwhile, Kelly Grobstich from Davenport Assumption was on fire, breaking the state meet record in the 3A 200 meters and bagging the 100 meters as well. Emma Havighurst from Valley showed her prowess by resetting her own state mark in the 4A 100 hurdles, finishing impressively in 13.68 seconds.
Throughout the meet, we were thrilled to see plenty of history being made! Tay Seal of Clear Creek-Amana set a new state meet record in the 3A 110 hurdles at 13.58 seconds. On the girls’ side, Lili Denton from Council Bluffs St. Albert snagged her third state title with a meet record time in the 1A 1,500 meters. Freshman Charlee Gall of Cedar Falls impressed all by winning the 4A 1,500 meters with a time of 4:29.87.
Shattering Records Everywhere
The Ankeny boys didn’t just bring home medals; they set a sensational new all-time state meet record in the shuttle hurdle relay at 56.06 seconds. While the Treynor boys (2A) and Clear Creek-Amana boys (3A) also made their mark across various events, the Waukee Northwest girls capped things off by setting a new all-time Iowa record in the final girls race with a breathtaking time of 3:47.46.
