Swimmers Shine in Torrey Pines High School CIF Championships!

The beautiful city of San Diego recently witnessed an impressive display of talent and determination as the Torrey Pines High School Boys Swim Team captured their 10th straight CIF title at the section championships held on May 10 at Granite Hills High School. These talented young athletes put on a spectacular show, demonstrating skill and teamwork that left spectators in awe!

Boys Team Dominates the Competition

The Falcon boys swimmers not only claimed the winning title but also grabbed several podium finishes in various events, showcasing their prowess in the pool. Sophomore swimmers Aidan Copeland and Hamilton Gates made waves, quite literally, as they tied for the 100-yard freestyle title with a blazing time of 45.72 seconds. That’s right—two champions for the price of one!

But that’s not all. Aidan Copeland also secured second place in the 50-yard freestyle, while Hamilton Gates snagged second place in the 200-yard freestyle. Adding to the team’s celebration, junior Lukas Stein finished second in the 200-yard Individual Medley, and senior captain Kale Lozano proudly took third in the 500-yard freestyle. The teamwork didn’t stop there; the boys also clinched victories in both the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay alongside their fierce competitors Aidan, Hamilton, Lukas, and Kale. Talk about a team that knows how to swim together!

Girls Team Fights Hard

The Torrey Pines Girls Swimming Team did not come away empty-handed either. Although they were the runner-up at the section championships, they put up a strong fight and displayed their impressive skills against fierce competition from San Marcos High School, who have proven to be worthy challengers over the past few years. The girls, who had previously conquered CIF for an amazing 11 consecutive years, showed they are still a force to be reckoned with.

In a stunning display of strength, the girls team shattered a long-standing section record in the 400 freestyle relay with a new time set by sophomore Anita Qian, freshman Carolyn Han, and junior Katerina Wietfeldt, anchored by junior Aya Ferguson. The new record, established on this day, was a highlight moment since the previous mark had been standing since 2018!

The excitement didn’t stop there! The girls also set a new section 200 freestyle relay record of 1:34.16, surpassing their own fourth-place finish at the state meet last year. Aya Ferguson took center stage with outstanding performances, winning repeat titles in both the 200 freestyle at 1:47.82 and the 100 freestyle at 49.93! Not to be outdone, Anita Qian secured a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke, while Katerina Wietfeldt made headlines by winning the 50 freestyle and snagging third in the 100 backstroke.

Face Off at State Championships

Following their stellar performance at the sectional level, talented coach Richard Contreras, who has been leading the team for an impressive 28 years, took the swim team to compete at the state championship meet, scheduled from May 15-17 at Clovis West High in Clovis. With a vast experience under his belt and a remarkable track record of 24 CIF titles, Coach Contreras certainly knows how to nurture and breed champions. The girls swim team placed high, finishing sixth in the state for the 200 freestyle relay and 11th in the 400 freestyle relay.

It’s worth noting that Aya Ferguson, while fighting an illness leading up to the meet, still managed to compete, finishing 21st in the prelims of the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.26. Her resilience is commendable and demonstrates the true spirit of a competitor!

An Eye on the Future

Exciting changes are on the horizon for the Torrey Pines swim team! Construction is underway for a new aquatic center on campus that will feature a state-of-the-art 15-lane swimming pool, locker rooms, team rooms, and even a concession stand. This facility is poised to elevate the training experience, allowing the athletes a place they can proudly call home. Until then, they have been practicing at the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest San Diego, getting the most out of the evening lane rentals.

The future of the Torrey Pines swim program looks bright indeed! With soaring ambitions and the limits of their potential still untapped, these young swimmers are certainly set to leave their mark in years to come!
