Hello, Reno Swim Fans!

The excitement is bubbling up like a wave about to crash, as Reno gets ready to host the thrilling 5A/3A Regional swim meet at the sparkling Moana Springs Aquatic Center. This annual event is not just your typical swim meet; it promises record-breaking potential and showcases some of the finest talent our high school swimmers have to offer. Join us in marking the calendar for May 8, which is dedicated to diving, followed by swimming events on May 9 and 10. It’s going to be an unforgettable weekend!

Spotlight on Zach Power

In the spotlight this year is none other than senior star swimmer Zach Power from Sage Ridge. Power has had a bit of an up-and-down season due to some missed meets, but he’s making a grand comeback at the Regional and state meets. The excitement surrounding him is palpable, especially as he gets ready to swim for SMU next year!

What really has the buzz around him is his potential to break the state record in the 100 butterfly. Currently, Power is seeded with a time of 50.78 seconds in this discipline, but hold on to your hats—he has clocked an impressive personal best of 48.54 seconds! He is just a whisker away from the current state record, which stands at 48.50 seconds. It looks like this could be a nail-biter!

Rising Stars in the Pool

But Zach isn’t the only swimmer making waves! The girls’ division is also showcasing some incredible talent, and it seems that at least one record could be in serious jeopardy. The current record for the Girls 200 Individual Medley (IM) is held by Katy Houston from McQueen, who set the bar high back in 2003 with an impressive time of 2:03.42. However, Reno High junior Addison Sala is on a mission, having recently achieved a remarkable best time of 2:03.16 in the 200 IM this spring. Talk about a close call!

Not to be left behind, Galea sophomore Marni Kraemer has also been turning heads with her time of 2:04.28 in the same event. With both Sala and Kraemer pushing each other, the Girls 200 IM is shaping up to be a must-watch event at the upcoming Regional meet. Will we see a new record set? The anticipation is simply electrifying!

What’s Next?

As if that wasn’t enough, the excitement continues as the state meet is also around the corner, scheduled for May 16-17, right back at Moana Springs. This venue is quickly becoming the go-to hotspot for swimming talent, and we can’t wait to see what all our high school athletes will achieve. The frenzy of competition, along with the potential for records to be shattered, creates an atmosphere that no swim fan would want to miss.
