Let’s take a moment to celebrate some standouts! At the recent Butler Invitational on April 17, Jamie Kociela from Franklin Regional made quite the splash, placing sixth in the high jump. This is surely just the beginning of a bright track season for Jamie and her teammates.
Then at the WCCA Championships on April 24, the talent truly shined as Preston Miller from Latrobe sprinted to victory in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at a record-breaking time of just 10.74 seconds! He managed to outrun prominent competitors including Daniel Maddock from Norwin, Adam Piper from Latrobe, and Loch Bresnahan from Franklin Regional. Preston’s remarkable performance has certainly put him on everyone’s radar!
Franklin Regional is also proud of their sophomore star Sean Cartwright, who recently competed in the high jump at the “Wildcat Invitational” on April 11. It’s this kind of participation that fuels the team spirit and ambition within the school’s athletic community.
Upcoming Major Track Events
As we move to the upcoming weekend, three major track and field invitationals are set to take place, promising plenty of action for fans and families alike. The 51st Baldwin Invitational will kick off at 12:30 p.m., featuring a whopping 61 teams. Among those competing will be schools like Canon-McMillan, Mt. Lebanon, and North Allegheny. What a wonderful opportunity for these athletes to showcase their skills alongside some fierce competition!
Meanwhile, the Pine-Richland Invitational is gearing up to host more than 75 teams, including notables like Butler, Greensburg Salem, and of course, Latrobe. The action for this exciting event gets started at 10:30 a.m. Coach Bob Ralston of Franklin Regional has expressed his appreciation for this event, citing that it offers better parking and coach access compared to Baldwin, making it a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
On another front, Derry and Ligonier Valley will be competing at the Altoona Mountain Lion Classic, which categorizes schools into large and small divisions. There are so many opportunities ahead for our local athletes to prove themselves and strive for excellence!
WPIAL Championship Updates
On the championship stage, the WPIAL Team Championship Semifinals, initially scheduled for Tuesday, had to be postponed to Wednesday due to severe thunderstorms. Fortunately, the teams are ready to hit the track! As we look forward to the finals for the boys’ Class 3A, teams like North Allegheny, Norwin, Butler, and Mt. Lebanon have made the cut. Their finals will take place at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at West Mifflin.
On the girls’ side for Class 3A, North Allegheny, Norwin, Butler, and South Fayette will take their shot at victory. It’s equally worth noting that for Class 2A boys, Shenango, Mohawk, Beaver, and Quaker Valley made it through to the finals, which are set for 3 p.m. at Peters Township.
What Lies Ahead
Looking further down the track, the stage is set for the WPIAL Individual Championships scheduled for May 14 at Slippery Rock University. Athletes are bubbling with anticipation as they prepare for last-chance qualifiers at Norwin and Pine-Richland on May 8, and at West Mifflin on May 9. Don’t forget the City League Championship coming up on May 3 and May 10 at Oliver High School. With field events kicking off at 10 a.m. on the first day and running events following suit on the second day, it’ll be an event to remember.
