Omaha, Nebraska – As the college baseball season heats up, all eyes will soon turn to the NCAA Division I baseball tournament. This prestigious tournament kicks off every spring, featuring the top 64 teams in the country vying for a coveted spot in the Men’s College World Series (MCWS) in Omaha.

The tournament has a rich history, beginning in 1947 with just eight teams competing in a simple format. Over the years, it has grown tremendously, now comprising four rounds that determine the national champion. Currently, teams are divided into two qualifying categories: automatic berths and at-large selections. There are 29 conference champions that earn automatic bids, along with 35 other teams selected by the NCAA DI Baseball Committee.

The tournament format consists of several stages. First, in the Regionals, the 64 teams are split into 16 double-elimination brackets, where each team fights to stay alive in the tournament. Next, the 16 winners advance to the Super Regionals, and from there, they compete in a best-of-three series. The eight winners from this round then head to the Men’s College World Series, divided into two brackets. The final showdown occurs when the champions of each bracket face off in the MCWS Finals, also a best-of-three series to crown the NCAA champion.

The tournament unfolds after the regular season, in late May or early June. Amidst the challenging competition, it’s Southern California that holds the record for the most MCWS titles, with an impressive 12 championships to their name. Their winning legacy began in 1948, capturing the title multiple times, notably during a dominant stretch from 1968 to 1974.

As the countdown begins to this year’s tournament, excitement is building for players and fans alike. You can keep an eye on the latest bracket updates and ticket information at NCAA.com. The journey to Omaha is about to begin, and it promises to be an exhilarating road for all involved.
