Michigan State University Faces NCAA Investigation Over Recruiting Violations
In East Lansing, Michigan State University is currently under investigation by the NCAA due to alleged recruiting violations connected to the football program during the tenure of former head coach Mel Tucker. The university’s president, Kevin Guskiewicz, confirmed the investigation’s existence in a recent meeting with local media.
When questioned about the situation, Guskiewicz noted that the investigation is looking into recruiting issues from a few years back, though he did not specify how serious the allegations might be. He said, “We’re trying to make the case that this is a whole new coaching staff,” referring to current head coach Jonathan Smith, who took over the position on November 25, 2023.
Mel Tucker was hired in February 2020, but he was let go in September 2023 after facing serious misconduct allegations, including a complaint from advocacy figure Brenda Tracy involving sexual harassment. Following his dismissal, an internal investigation concluded that Tucker had indeed harassed Tracy during her association with the football program.
According to NCAA spokesperson Saquandra Heath, the organization cannot provide any comments regarding ongoing or potential investigations due to confidentiality rules established by member schools. MSU’s associate athletic director, Matt Larson, stated that the university has been cooperative throughout the process and will continue to assist the NCAA.
Tucker’s coaching record at Michigan State stands at 20 wins and 14 losses, with his prime performance showcasing an impressive 11-2 season in 2021. Nonetheless, Tucker’s time with MSU was marred by controversies, which included a lawsuit he filed against the university, alleging he was unfairly scapegoated amid scrutiny of the institution’s handling of past incidents.
In addition to the NCAA concerns, Tracy has also filed a defamation suit against Tucker. Legal proceedings continue with several motions filed, while the judge has yet to issue rulings on any of these cases. Guskiewicz mentioned he has a meeting scheduled for next week to discuss the NCAA investigation further, but he could not provide additional details at this time.
As the situation evolves, Michigan State University is focused on moving past the controversies linked to its former football staff and supporting its current program.
