The New York Jets are preparing for major changes in 2025, as they are reportedly considering parting ways with star wide receiver Davante Adams. NFL sources have indicated that if a suitable trade can’t be found, the Jets plan to release him, which is largely driven by his hefty salary cap number of $38.2 million.

This development follows the recent announcement of the Jets’ split with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers after just two seasons. Adams joined the Jets midseason in 2024 after being traded from the Las Vegas Raiders for a conditional third-round pick. Despite high hopes that his presence would lift a struggling team, the Jets went on to finish the season with a disappointing record of 5-12.

In his 11 games with New York, Adams posted impressive stats, recording 854 yards on 67 receptions and scoring seven touchdowns. However, it took an extensive 114 targets to achieve those numbers, highlighting the inefficiencies that plagued the Jets’ offense throughout the season.

Adams’ contract had him slated to earn $35.64 million in base salary for the next two seasons, but there was no guaranteed money involved. This situation makes it clear why the Jets are looking to move on, especially with the need to focus their offense around promising young receiver Garrett Wilson and talented running back Breece Hall.

As they look ahead, new head coach Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand will need to strategize a path forward, prioritizing finding a new quarterback and possibly adding a complementary receiver instead of a direct replacement for Wilson. This could lead to significant discussions during the offseason as the Jets aim to reinvigorate their offense.

Additionally, from the broader NFL landscape, other teams are also making adjustments. The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly open to trading receiver Brandon Aiyuk, and have already traded Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders for a fifth-round pick. Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys are looking to keep their defensive end Demarcus Lawrence in Dallas despite approaching free agency.

As the NFL offseason heats up, teams are making moves to reshape their rosters and find ways to improve for next season.
