San Francisco is once again the home of Robert Saleh, who has officially returned to the San Francisco 49ers as their defensive coordinator. This news comes after a brief stint where Saleh interviewed for several head coaching positions, including a potential role with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Saleh, who previously served as the Niners’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, has big shoes to fill after the team faced struggles on defense last season. Despite talented players, the Niners finished 29th in points allowed and their problems on that side of the ball became a pressing issue. The franchise is hopeful that Saleh can bring back the strong defensive identity he once established.
Last season was challenging for San Francisco, finishing with a 6-11 record. They dealt with significant injuries and a drop in their defensive performance. After opting to move away from former defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen, head coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear that they are committed to improving their defensive lineup.
During Saleh’s previous tenure, the defense was known for its efficiency, ranking in the top 10 for both yards and points allowed on multiple occasions. His return is viewed as a major step towards rebuilding a defense that has not been the same since he left for the New York Jets where he served as head coach.
In his four years with the Jets, Saleh ended with a 20-36 record, experiencing challenges, particularly with inconsistent quarterback play. However, his defensive acumen cannot be overlooked, as evidenced by the top rankings his defenses attained during his career.
As Saleh sets his focus on the upcoming season, the 49ers main objectives include building a cohesive defensive unit that can mirror the success seen during his previous time with the team. The players now have a chance to rally behind someone who truly understands the Niners’ defensive legacy.
With Saleh back in the fold, fans are hopeful for a fresh start as the team strategizes for a much more promising 2025 season.
