New Orleans – In a surprising turn of events, pass rusher Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns has openly confirmed his request for a trade. The 29-year-old star player made his intentions known during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show at Super Bowl LIX’s media center on Wednesday, sharing his reasons for wanting to leave Cleveland after eight seasons.
Garrett expressed a profound love for the city of Cleveland, but stressed that his main focus has always been on the pursuit of championships. “I have a lot of love for Cleveland,” he said, “but it’s always for me been about [competing] for championships, winning those big games and winning Lombardis.” With the Browns yet to find success in reaching that ultimate goal, Garrett is looking for a change.
“The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl,” he stated. He further emphasized that his focus is on winning rather than personal accolades. “It’s never been about the Hall of Fame for me. You’re remembered for winning,” he added.
The Browns have faced challenges at the quarterback position, and with the situation surrounding Deshaun Watson looking grim, it seems they might be heading toward yet another rebuild. Garrett mentioned that his decision to request a trade was not made lightly, indicating a feeling of misalignment with the direction the franchise is heading. “I just don’t think we’re aligned on where the team is going in the near future,” he noted.
This parallels the case of Matthew Stafford when he requested a trade from the Lions in 2021, seeking a fresh start. Garrett mentioned his desire to experience a successful run just like Stafford did with the Rams.
Despite Garrett’s clear intentions to move, the Browns have reiterated their stance of not trading him, according to sources. Garrett stated that he is not focused on the possibility of the Browns dismissing his request for now. “It’s possible they could do that, but that’s a little further down the line than I’m willing to look,” he said.
Garrett also mentioned discussing his situation with LeBron James, who knows a thing or two about transitions from Cleveland. “Just making sure I made a logical decision, taking my time,” Garrett shared, reflecting on their conversation.
As this situation continues to unfold, the football world is eagerly watching to see where Garrett may land and how it could affect the Browns as they look to reshape their roster for future success.
