In Clackamas, the Cavaliers dominated the Gresham Gophers in a Mt. Hood Conference football game on Friday, October 13, 2023, winning with a score of 38-12. This victory improves the Cavaliers’ standing and showcases their growing strength as they aim to finish the season strong.
This game comes during a busy time for high school football in Oregon, as significant changes are on the way for next year’s classifications. The landscape of Class 5A football will shift considerably when teams shuffle between Class 6A and Class 5A. Notably, the David Douglas and Gresham teams are both dropping to Class 5A following challenging seasons where they both recorded a 1-8 record in 2024.
These teams will join Special District 1, alongside schools like Centennial, Hood River Valley, La Salle Prep, Milwaukie, Parkrose, and Putnam. Meanwhile, McNary, which finished with a 0-9 record in 2024, is also making the move down to Class 5A and will compete within Special District 2, which includes Aloha, Canby, Forest Grove, Hillsboro, McKay, and Wilsonville.
Meanwhile, Glencoe is moving back to Class 6A after a strong 7-3 season that took them to the Class 5A playoffs, rejoining the Pacific Conference. Additionally, Willamette is also moving up after a stunning turnaround, going from 0-9 in 2023 to 8-2 in 2024 under new coach Josh Line. They will join Class 6A Special District 1.
These changes are set to be discussed and confirmed at the OSAA executive board meeting on February 3. As this classification shift unfolds, it marks a new chapter for many of these teams and presents fresh opportunities for competition.
