NFL Coaching Changes: A Busy Offseason in the League
The 2024 NFL regular season has wrapped up, and a notable shake-up is happening in the coaching ranks. Seven teams have decided to move on from their head coaches, and while six of those vacancies have been filled, one remains open: the New Orleans Saints position.
The latest team to finalize their hiring is the Cowboys, who have promoted their offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer. This follows a decision to part ways with Mike McCarthy after he posted a 49-35 record during his tenure. Schottenheimer, who has never been a head coach before, has a solid relationship with quarterback Dak Prescott and is expected to lead the team moving forward.
In other movements, Pete Carroll has reached a deal to take over as the head coach of the Raiders. This marks a new chapter for Carroll, who previously enjoyed success with the Seattle Seahawks. He is now the fifth head coach the Raiders have had since moving to Las Vegas, and the team hopes his experience will turn things around after a disappointing 4-13 season under Antonio Pierce.
The Jaguars have also made a significant move, hiring Liam Coen from the Buccaneers after a brief back-and-forth regarding his contract. Coen’s coaching acumen will be tested as he takes on the responsibility of leading Jacksonville.
Meanwhile, the Jets have welcomed Aaron Glenn as their head coach. Glenn, who played for the Jets in the 90s, is returning to his roots with aspirations of revitalizing the team. His previous role as the Lions’ defensive coordinator has set high expectations for his new position.
The Bears have opted for innovation by bringing in Ben Johnson from the Lions. Johnson led the Lions to impressive offensive rankings in recent seasons, and he will be looking to bring that success to Chicago.
Lastly, Mike Vrabel is stepping in as the head coach for the Patriots. Vrabel has proven his worth during his time with the Titans and is hoping to resurrect the Patriots’ performance after a rough 4-13 season.
The lone coaching search still ongoing is for the Saints. After dismissing Dennis Allen following a seven-game losing streak, the team is now led by special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi on an interim basis.
With these changes, the NFL coaching landscape is evolving quickly this offseason. The anticipation of who will finally land the Saints job continues, leaving fans and analysts eager to see who will take the helm of each franchise.
