Captain Munnerlyn Named Head Coach at Chambers High School

Charlotte, NC – Former NFL cornerback Captain Munnerlyn was officially introduced as the head coach for Chambers High School on Friday during a news conference held in the school’s auditorium. Munnerlyn, who has a history with both the Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings, expressed his intentions clearly: he wants to “bring the swagger” back to a program that has seen its share of success in North Carolina.

Addressing his future players, the 36-year-old Munnerlyn stated, “I came here to win now and win early, point blank, period.” He emphasized his enthusiasm and eagerness to work with the team and their ambition to set a standard of excellence. Munnerlyn replaces Brandon Wiggins, who led the team to a 22-12 record over three seasons.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, Munnerlyn was an All-SEC player during his time at the University of South Carolina and was drafted by the Panthers in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He brings prior coaching experience to the role, having served as the defensive backs coach at Myers Park High School in Charlotte for the past two seasons.

Chris James, the head coach at Myers Park, praised Munnerlyn for his discipline and ability to connect with players. “He’ll be great in building relationships with kids,” James said. “Obviously, he knows the Xs and Os part.” James also mentioned that Munnerlyn has been involved in coaching youth in the Charlotte community even before taking the job at Myers Park.

At Chambers, Munnerlyn takes over a program recognized as one of the best public school football teams in North Carolina. The school made four straight state championship appearances between 2018 and 2021, winning two titles. Munnerlyn joins a line of former NFL players who coach in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, bringing not just experience, but also a legacy of excellence in football.

As Munnerlyn steps into this important role, he will have support from coaches around Charlotte, and many believe he has the potential to restore the program’s past glory at Chambers. “He’s going to have to learn,” James acknowledged, “but I know he’ll bring some of that excitement back.”
