Cleveland State University Discontinues Three Sports Programs
CLEVELAND — Cleveland State University (CSU) has announced the discontinuation of three NCAA sports programs following a decision made by the Board of Trustees during their meeting on Thursday. The programs affected include wrestling, women’s golf, and softball. CSU stated that this tough decision will take effect at the end of their current season.
In a statement, the university explained that the move is part of a larger strategic effort that began in 2023, aiming to address ongoing budgetary shortfalls faced by the institution. CSU is committed to providing a positive student-athlete experience that contributes not only to their growth in sports but also in academics and community involvement.
CSU President Laura Bloomberg, PhD, highlighted that “over the past several years, one of our primary goals has been to restructure our financial model.” She noted that the athletics department, like other sections at CSU, has been reevaluating its programs to enhance student engagement in multiple areas.
Despite the discontinuation of these programs, CSU assured that affected student-athletes will maintain their athletic financial aid while continuing their education at the university. The athletics department plans to assist these individuals during their transition away from these sports.
Director of CSU Athletics Kelsie Gory Harkey expressed her disappointment, stating that “it is a tough day for Cleveland State Athletics.” She emphasized that the dedication and passion of the student-athletes and coaches involved in the discontinued programs have greatly contributed to the CSU community. She reassured the community that CSU will strive to support its athletes in fulfilling their educational and athletic goals.
CSU also confirmed that it has no intent to shut down any of its remaining 15 athletic programs and continues to be an active member of the Horizon League athletic conference, committed to participation in Division I Athletics.
