ELK GROVE, CA – The struggling Sheldon Huskies football team is set to face Laguna Creek on Friday night in their final Delta League game, marking a challenging week for the Elk Grove Unified School District program. The team has been in turmoil and desperately needs a win to boost their chances of making it to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
Earlier this week, the long-serving Huskies head coach, Chris Nixon, was told to hand in his keys by athletic director Jason Bumbaca. The school and district officials have been tight-lipped about Nixon’s current status after a heated exchange occurred following last Friday’s game against Elk Grove. This confrontation was sparked when a parent confronted Nixon about playing time. An email sent to Husky parents informed them that “Coach Nixon will not be at practice this week or the game on Friday.” The email assured parents that their students are safe and thanked them for their patience during this time.
The tension within the team was evident as only twelve out of thirty players showed up for practice on Monday, with many others choosing to stay away in support of Nixon. Practice was then canceled. The following day, attendance did slightly improve, but practice was again called off. Principal Leticia Bucio met with the squad on Wednesday to discuss player morale and commitment to the game while not being able to comment on Nixon’s status.
The Elk Grove Unified District office has indicated that inquiries into Nixon’s situation are considered confidential, emphasizing that the football program will continue through the season. However, the Huskies will take the field with a notably diminished roster, as seven players, including team captains, and all assistant coaches chose not to participate as a sign of their support for Nixon. Bumbaca will take over coaching duties for Friday’s game, supported by staff and coaches from other sports.
Sheldon currently holds a 4-5 record, and while four wins are generally required for a playoff berth, the last game against Laguna Creek is crucial, as both teams are vying for that coveted spot in the postseason. Laguna Creek is also battling for a playoff opportunity with a 3-5 record. As the teams prepare for their face-off, concerns about the integrity and spirit of the Huskies remain at the forefront.
It remains to be seen whether Nixon will return to the sidelines or if his time at Sheldon has come to an end. The support from players and coaches demonstrates the bond within the team amidst uncertainty. As the Huskies prepare for the game ahead, the focus will be on their performance and the potential to secure a playoff opportunity.
