In Charlotte, North Carolina, the administration at Charlotte Catholic High School is taking significant steps in response to allegations of bullying involving members of the school’s football team. President Kurt Telford informed parents during a recent communication that the school has initiated disciplinary actions against players involved in at least three separate bullying incidents that occurred in the boys’ locker room.
Telford’s announcement outlines that the investigation was launched after students reported witnessing bullying behavior. The school maintains a stringent policy against bullying and intimidation, emphasizing that there are serious consequences for those found in violation of this policy. “Charlotte Catholic High School has a strict policy that prohibits bullying and intimidation of any kind and includes consequences for anyone involved in such behavior,” Telford stated.
The potential punishments for those involved in the incidents range from expulsion from school to suspension and even removal from the football team. Telford expressed appreciation for the support from the community, noting that collaboration between parents and students is essential to ensuring a safe environment and encouraging further reporting of any concerning behavior.
On October 16, Catholic’s football coach, Keith Emery, acknowledged the investigation but refrained from sharing details, stating, “I really can’t discuss an ongoing investigation. What I can tell you is that we’re taking this seriously and will take whatever disciplinary and other action is necessary.” Despite the internal turmoil, the Cougars continued their success on the field, recently defeating Butler 34-14, which secured them the No. 1 playoff seed in Southwestern 4A conference and at least a share of the league title.
Currently holding a record of 6-2 and winning five consecutive games, the Cougars are set to close their regular season against East Mecklenburg on Friday. The East Mecklenburg team has struggled this season, recording only one win and losing their last two games. After this matchup, Charlotte Catholic will prepare for the upcoming playoffs starting November 15, with the possibility of adding an extra game to their schedule due to changes prompted by Hurricane Helene.
