Columbia, SC – In a significant decision on Tuesday morning, the South Carolina High School League Executive Committee voted to extend the high school football season by one week. This change was made in light of the severe impacts from a recent storm that affected many areas, especially in the Upstate CSRA region.
The committee’s decision ensures that high school football fans will now see the state championship weekend occurring a week later than originally planned. The championship games are set to take place on December 13-14 at the Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium, located at South Carolina State University.
According to estimates from the SCHSL, around 70 games were unable to be played due to the storm’s impact. Many schools were left scrambling to readjust their schedules, and this decision allows teams and players to have a fair chance at completing their season.
The vote required a two-thirds majority to pass, indicating strong support among committee members to take this step to accommodate the challenges posed by the weather.
This extension provides not only an opportunity for teams to regroup but also ensures that players and fans will have a complete playoff experience. With the playoff format remaining unchanged at five rounds, all participating teams will still have the chance to vie for their spot in the state championship.
As the season progresses, schools will be looking to make the most of this extension, aiming to keep the spirit of high school football alive in anticipation of the championship showdown next month.
