New York Jets Make Shock Coaching Change
New York, NY – The New York Jets have made a stunning move by firing head coach Robert Saleh just five games into the 2024 NFL season. The decision, however, did not come as a complete surprise. Concerns about Saleh’s coaching abilities had been brewing since the end of the previous season. Jets’ owner Woody Johnson expressed his frustrations with the team’s performance during the 2023 season, particularly criticizing the offense and the lack of a capable backup quarterback. His comments were clear: the team had the talent, but it was not being utilized effectively.
Despite signing Saleh after the 2023 season, Johnson’s patience wore thin as the Jets started 2-3 this season. The recent loss to the Denver Broncos, where they scored just nine points at home, raised more eyebrows. With the Jets‘ offense struggling, especially during the recent 23-17 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings in London, Johnson decided it was time for a change.
Saleh’s firing reflects deeper issues within the Jets organization. The team has not only struggled with scoring, averaging the fewest points per game since 2021, but it also once again leads the league in penalties. Johnson’s frustration made it clear: “We’re not going to find those ways by doing the same thing over and over and over,” he said.
Taking over as interim head coach is Jeff Ulbrich, the team’s defensive coordinator. This presents a crucial opportunity for Ulbrich as he looks to turn things around for a Jets team that many believe has the talent to succeed. It will be up to him to instill discipline and make adjustments on both sides of the ball.
The Jets now face a critical matchup against the Buffalo Bills this coming Monday. Johnson recognized the urgency, stating, “This is one of the most talented teams that has ever been assembled by the New York Jets.” With the pressure on, it will be interesting to see if Ulbrich can bring the positive change the Jets desperately need and salvage the rest of the season.
