Cleveland High School Fumes over Unsportsmanlike Conduct by Willis Players

CLEVELAND, Texas — An incident during a high school football game has left locals in Cleveland outraged. After a dominating victory where Willis High School beat Cleveland High School 77-0 last Friday night, a viral video emerged showcasing a group of Willis players choosing to express their victory through what many are calling childish actions. Instead of the customary handshake, they decided to use their belts to spank their opponents.

In the video, which has been widely circulated on social media, the players seem to ignore the principles of sportsmanship as they partake in this bizarre trend known as the BTA challenge. This trend involves athletes playfully using their belts on adversaries after a win. However, this behavior has not been received lightly, especially by the Cleveland community.

One local mother, Melanie Gonzalez, expressed her disappointment, stating, “That’s just shady and there’s no point in doing that.” Mary Almaguer, another parent, echoed these sentiments, adding, “That is ridiculous.” The unsporting antics have sparked outrage among parents and students alike. Almaguer voiced her concerns, saying she would be “very pissed off” if she saw her son being hit with a belt on social media.

Cleveland Independent School District (CISD) has issued a statement addressing the situation. They clarified that they are aware of the video and that it has been addressed. Superintendent McCanless has been in contact with Willis Independent School District (ISD) to ensure accountability. The CISD emphasized its disapproval of unsportsmanlike conduct and intends to take necessary action moving forward.

Willis ISD also expressed regret over the players’ actions, stating, “This behavior does not reflect the values of our district.” They reported that the involved athletes would face a series of disciplinary actions, including a suspension for the first half of their upcoming game and community service. They’ve also communicated with the UIL and submitted proposed consequences.

Despite these measures, some, like Almaguer, feel that the punishment is inadequate, suggesting it should extend beyond just a half-game suspension. “Maybe the rest of the season, some counseling,” she said.

This incident has ignited a discussion around the importance of sportsmanship and respect in athletics and how such moments can affect the greater community.
