Saline, Michigan – Saline Area Schools has made a significant announcement regarding their high school varsity football team. On Tuesday, the district revealed that players will be forfeiting the first three games of the 2024 season due to violations of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) residency regulations.
In a letter dated October 1, Superintendent Stephen D. Laatsch informed the football families that the decision comes after failing to meet residency requirements. Laatsch emphasized that issues concerning residency fraud are taken very seriously and stated that while this situation is unfortunate, there is no individual to blame.
“These forfeitures, while extremely unfortunate, do not diminish the hard work and accomplishments of the student-athletes or coaches,” said Athletic Director Ashley Mantha. She expressed support for Coach Short, a first-year varsity coach at Saline, highlighting his strong sense of empathy and integrity. “It is important to clarify that Coach Short had no involvement in the circumstances that led to these infractions.”
Laatsch reassured families that the district is working diligently to prevent similar issues from arising in the future. He noted that conversations are ongoing to improve internal processes that involve the Enrollment Office, Athletic Department, and compliance officer.
Mark Uyl, the Executive Director of MHSAA, commented on the situation, recognizing Saline as a model member school. “We appreciate and respect how this matter was handled,” he said, indicating that the school is responding appropriately to the violations.
The district’s letter further emphasizes the importance of honesty and integrity within their academic and athletic programs, asserting their commitment to fostering ethical behavior among students. Despite the setbacks, Laatsch and Mantha expressed pride in the resilience and character displayed by the student-athletes during this challenging time.
As Saline Area Schools navigates this issue, students, coaches, and families remain hopeful for a successful season ahead, focusing on both academic and athletic achievements.
